Beethoven’s C minor Piano Concerto, sharing its key and stormy intensity with his Fifth Symphony, is a formidable vehicle for the stellar musicianship and superb pianism of Javier Perianes. Completed six years earlier, Haydn’s ‘Clock’ Symphony was composed on a grand scale for his London concerts in 1793-4. Its reception was rapturous, the Morning Chronicle almost lost for words: ‘It was Haydn; what can we, what need we say more?’
